The client wanted colorful flowers, edible herbs, and tomatoes for her children to enjoy in the backyard. We planted grey rectangular fiberglass pots around the perimeter of the yard, filled to the brim with masses of plants. To frame the view from the apartment, we planted a Japanese Maple (Acer japonica `Butterfly`) and a serpentine River Birch (Betula nigra). My favorite planter was a low wooden planter that contained soft, tactile plants like Woolly Creeping Thyme (Thymus pseudolanuginosus) and Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina).
